CHAPTER SEVEN
KELLI planned to go shopping Sunday morning while Sam and the girls were at church. She had nothing to wear while playing golf at an exclusive club, even among all of her new purchases for the television show. She told Sam as much.
âWeâll come with you,â he said.
âYou just want to get out of going to church.â
âSure,â he agreed, sending Joe a wink. The cameraman just shook his head and mouthed, âIâm not here.â
âBesides, you need my help.â His tone sobered. âAnd Danburyâs needs Boeke Appliances.â
She didnât argue with him. Somewhere in the past twenty-four hours, they had gone from competitors to allies. They were something more than that, as well, but Kelli didnât want to consider exactly what that might be. The possibilities were simply too scary.
âThereâs a nice upscale shop on Michigan Avenue that carries a womenâs golf line a lot of the ladies at the club wear.â Sam consulted his watch. âItâs probably not open till noon, but I bet the owners could be persuaded to flip the locks early. Weâll start there.â
âNo.â
âNo?â
âI shop at Danburyâs.â
âListen, I appreciate your loyalty to the store and all, but this is business.â
âExactly, which is why we will shop at Danburyâs. And if Danburyâs doesnât have the âinâ brands women are looking for when it comes to womenâs golf attire, Iâm going to suggest to our buyers that they start getting them.â
She had his attention. His full attention. So she pressed on. âGolf isnât just a manâs game. A lot of women play golf.â
When he arched an eyebrow, she said, âJust because I donât know how to play doesnât mean I donât read about it. Its popularity has skyrocketed across all segments of the population since Tiger Woods came along. But, popular or not, itâs still a game that requires money, even at a municipal course.
âItâs a game associated with affluence and the country club set, and yet suddenly half the people in the country want to play or at least look like they play. Other department stores have exclusive agreements with pros for endorsed products.â
âWe canât afford Tiger,â he replied dryly.
âNo, but we could carry more of the products he endorses. Or we could try to get an agreement with another pro. And that brings me to the mannequins.â
âHow did we move from golf to mannequins?â
âWe didnât. We moved from clothes to mannequins. A very natural segue, I might add. Keep up, please.â
He chuckled softly. âYouâre something else.â
She crossed her arms over her chest. âIâm just saying that Danburyâs mannequins all look like something right out of the nineteen fifties. It doesnât matter what kind of hip, trendy clothing you drape on them, they all wind up looking like June and Ward Cleaver.â
He touched her cheek. A soft, simple stroke that shouldnât have made her pulse jump or her knees feel weak.
âI meant it as a compliment, Kelli.â
When she said nothing, he teased, âThis is where you say, âthank you.ââ
âThank you.â
An hour later, all four of them were at Danburyâs accompanied by Joe and his ever-vigilant camera.
